Process for IRB Submissions: Carle Illinois College of Medicine

All CI MED human research projects must be submitted to UIUC IRB; however, not all CI MED human research projects require submission to Carle IRB.

The first step is to determine whether Carle Health is engaged in your human research project.

Note: Before submitting to Carle IRB, you must also work with Carle Health’s Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute to develop the research protocol. You will need to complete a Project Intake Form for Residents and CI Med Students on the Carle website. (If you are not a resident or a CI Med student, the form will likely not load for you.)

Step 1: Does your project team include a Carle physician or Carle employee?

If YES:

Your project engages Carle Health in human research and you must submit your project to Carle IRB and UIUC IRB to determine which IRB should have oversight.

If NO:

Move to step 2.

Step 2: Does your project involve Carle Health in another way?

Does your project involve Carle Health in another way, for example, accessing the Carle electronic medical record, recruiting patients at a Carle Health location, or conducting research activities at a Carle Health location?

If YES:

Your project engages Carle Health in human research and you must submit your project to Carle IRB and UIUC IRB to determine which IRB should have oversight.

If NO:

Your project does not engage Carle Health in human research and no submission to Carle IRB is required. Proceed with UIUC IRB process.
